Prep (5 to 11years)

Prep School - A day in the life...

Morning Arrival
Children arrive for a soft start between 8:30am and 9:00am. For families who need an earlier drop-off, we offer Breakfast Club and a variety of sports clubs before 8:30am throughout the week.

During this morning time, children are encouraged to:

  • approach class teachers about homework,
  • complete set tasks,
  • read, or
  • work on projects before the day begins.

At 8:40am, teachers join the children in the playground and remain with them until the bell at 8:55am for registration. Together, we follow our teachers up the fabulous staircase to our classrooms, ready to begin the day.

Morning Lessons
Lessons begin promptly at 9:00am, usually with English and Maths. These are interactive, practical lessons where children are encouraged to share ideas, work collaboratively, and support one another.

At the end of lessons, children self-assess their work using a traffic light system to reflect on their understanding. Teachers provide feedback and extra support where needed, helping pupils take the next step in their learning.

Break time starts at 11:00am and gives pupils the chance to meet friends, play games, and enjoy a healthy snack before lessons resume.

After break, morning learning continues, often focusing on Science or Modern Languages.

Lunchtime

By 12:30pm, children are ready for lunch! We eat together, enjoying conversation with friends and teachers. After lunch, pupils make the most of the playground — from football and netball to the timber trail. Some pupils take on the role of playground buddies, helping staff to ensure everyone follows our agreed playground rules.

Afternoon Lessons
The afternoons are varied and exciting, with subjects such as:

  • History
  • Geography
  • P.E.
  • Verbal Reasoning
  • R.E.
  • Art and Design
  • Dance

Teachers build lessons around children’s ideas and interests, encouraging them to present their work to the very best of their ability. Pupils take great pride in earning their pen licence for excellent handwriting and presentation.

Extra-Curricular Activities
We love representing our school in cross country, dance, swimming, orienteering, football and netball. These activities promote teamwork, resilience, and striving to be the very best we can.

At the end of the day, pupils can relax or continue learning in a wide range of after school clubs, including:

  • Art
  • Sports
  • Horse riding
  • Knitting
  • Late Club (social time with friends and homework support)

Every day at St Martin’s is filled with opportunities to learn, create, play, and grow together.
